Welcome to Usworth Colliery Primary School

 Parents Association

The Committee - Who are we?

We are a small group of volunteer parents, with children in all years of Usworth Colliery Primary School. We are supported by Mrs Maughan - the Headteacher.

We are more than happy to welcome new faces joining us and get fresh ideas for fundraising, as each year we lose members when their children move up to Comprehensive school.

What do we do?

We aim to raise money for the school, to benefit all our children. We have a say in how and what the money is spent on. In recent years we have helped fund: new books, digital camera and camcorder, a stage system, bookbags, team sportswear, IT software, musical equipment, public address unit etc. On average we raise £3,000 per year! This could be more with your help.

How do we fundraise?

Throughout the school year we hold a number of events to raise money. These include school discos for the children, sponsored events, a Christmas and Summer fair, raffles, family socials etc. We need help at these events to set up beforehand, purchase supplies, prepare food, sell tickets, run stalls and so on.

Could you help us to do this?

As your child attends Usworth Colliery Primary School, you are automatically a member of our Parents Association. Please come along and join us at future meetings and events, we are grateful for any time you can spare. You support is vital to the future of the Parents Association.

Please contact the school office for details of when the next Parents Association meeting will be.

Our School Council

Our school council was formed in May 2003, in order to involve pupils more in the decision-making process in school and to further improve the opportunities we provide for personal development. We feel it is very important that our young people have a 'voice' and an opportunity to practice the skills learned within our personal, social and citizenship programme.

The Selection Process

Elections are held every year, in order to select members to sit on the school council. Pupils may be nominated by another pupil (with their agreement) or nominate themselves. Pupils are then asked to prepare a short speech to deliver to their class stating why they feel they would be able to fulfil the role of class representative. Voting then takes place and the votes are counted centrally and the results announced.

What does the school council do?

The school council meets fortnightly to discuss a range of issues. The representatives from each class have the opportunity to share and discuss any ideas or issues which have been expressed by pupils in their year group. The council also have the opportunity to contribute their ideas, views and opinions in the development of school policies and initiatives. The class representatives have the opportunity to report back to their class after the fortnightly meetings and to seek the views of pupils in their class of issues discussed.

Our plans for this half term are to ....

  • have climbing equipment on the field;
  • football goal posts on the yard;
  • have more role-play equipment for Key Stage 1;
  • improve the Key Stage 2 cloakrooms.
